Belcea Quartet in the Time of COVID-19

Presented by: HKU MUSE
Produced by: HKU MUSE

Synopsis: Given the uncertainties of the global pandemic, HKU MUSE’s highly anticipated ‘Complete Beethoven String Quartet Cycle’ with the acclaimed Belcea Quartet will not take place in 2020. The set of 6 concerts originally scheduled for November was meant to be a landmark celebration for the composer’s 250th anniversary and we know this is disappointing for Hong Kong music lovers. But while we are working hard to reschedule the concerts, Belcea’s violist Krzysztof Chorzelski spoke to us virtually.

In this conversation hosted by Prof. Daniel Chua, Krz will share how the group cope with the unprecedented challenges, what the Beethoven Cycle means to them, and why these emotions need to be recognized especially during this tough time. He will tell us about his first encounter with Beethoven’s quartet at a CD shop in East Berlin years ago, as well as reflect fondly on their time with their mentors, the great Alban Berg and Amadeus Quartets.
