Synopsis: In this programme, Cantonese ballads are performed in a fishing boat setting. The first song, “Read my heart”, is a new work created in the Cantonese ballad style. “Magpie”, the second song, is a sanban (free rhythm) rendition of the tune with the same name in the collection Xin Yueou Jiexin, by Liao Fengshu. A male-female duet sung over the water is added in the last part of the piece. Cantonese ballads were written by scholars and writers in the late Qing dynasty and early Republican period. Today, for the majority of the songs, only the lyrics remain, but early recordings show the slow and elegant musical style of the Cantonese ballads.
