The Phenomenon of Man: REVOLVER 2021 - PART ONE
Presented by: On & On Theatre Workshop
Produced by: On & On Theatre Workshop
Platform: Apple Podcast, Spotify
Synopsis: In the 1930s, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, a French palaeontologist and priest, experienced the archaeological discovery of the Peking Man in China and, with the help of American sculptor Lucile Swan, wrote the influential book The Phenomenon of Man.
Years have passed. The world has changed. When the remains of Peking Man are discovered in Hong Kong in 2021, and the authorities decide to launch a Peking Man theme park, not everyone is happy. Freelancer Ziu and actor Man-wah, both active in the 2014 Umbrella Movement, are torn between ideals and reality.
Part fact, part fantasy, On & On Theatre Workshop’s The Phenomenon of Man: REVOLVER is a sombre, lyrical, contemplative work about collective connectivity, the here and now, the future and the universe. The production premiered in 2017 to audience and critic acclaim.
In this newly adapted performance, playwright Wu King-yeung and director Chan Ping-chiu intensify the scale and relationship of the intersecting storylines – that play out during the 1917 Russian Revolution, in 1930s Beijing, and in Hong Kong in 2021 – and split the performance into two experiential parts. Part 1 is a five-part online radio play-style podcast that audiences are recommended to listen to before joining the troupe for Part 2, the theatrical performance on stage.
